Alas, neither of these sites exist any longer. Here's my story...
In January of 2000, I joined the team at
. Theatre.com was quite a comprehensive theatre site complete
with News, Reference, Listings, Shopping, and Ticketing. It was spearheaded
by Toby Simkin
, Internet and Theatre pioneer, who, in my humble opinion, is single handedly
responsible for getting Broadway into Cyberspace. I was most excited about
the idea of joining theatre.com. Our plan was to integrate the
content of the above sites into the continuously growing wealth of theatre
related information provided by theatre.com.
Sometime soon after joining, theatre.com was acquired by the Broadway Television Network (BTN). BTN's mission involved the taping and distribution of Broadway Shows on VHS/DVD and PPV. BTN had their own Web site, broadwaytv.com, and the two sites, for a little while, co-existed with broadwaytv.com providing information about BTN's video and broadcast offerings, and theatre.com continuing to provide News, Info, Shopping, and Listings.
Toby left the company in August of 2000 to
pursue other theatre related projects. But even before Toby's departure,
there were endless meetings where the future of the two sites was discussed.
In the end, it was decided that a new site would be created,
one that combined both the info and listings from theatre.com and the BTN
offerings from broadwaytv.com into a single theatre Megasite. The name
of this new site:
By the time work had begun on
BOL, the integration of OnBroadway and jogle's favorites into theatre.com
had already begun. These sites too then , would become a part of the
newly formed BroadwayOnLine.com.
The development of the new site was a rocky one which involved several redesigns
of the original theatre.com and broadwaytv.com sites (which never got officially
deployed) and several more changes in BOL management. However, work
on the new site progressed forward, during which time OnBroadway and jogle's
favorites maintained their separate identity.
On May 29, 2001, with the merging of the two sites finally completed BroadwayOnLine.com
was officially introduced to the Internet. And with that, OnBroadway and jogle's
favorites were officially made part of this new comprehensive site. The
URLs for OnBroadway and jogle's favorites were redirected to the appropriate
page on the new site. www.on-broadway.com was redirected to the BroadwayOnLine
listings pages and www.on-broadway.com/links was redirected to a new Links
area of BOL.
Fast forward 5 Months, to October 31, 2001. Due to financial constraints, BTN announced that they could no longer support the Internet branch of their business as they had in the past. As such BTN was forced to let me, and all of the remaining original theatre.com staff, go.
BTN still maintains the BroadwayOnLine site as a showcase for their video offerings. It also still provides limited ticketing (Broadway shows only) and maintains a Reference Center: an archive, if you will, of all of the News reported by theatre.com. The content that made up the OnBroadway and jogle's favorite pages, are still accessible from that Reference Center, though, no longer being employed with BroadwayOnLine or Broadway Television Network, I cannot say whether the pages continue to be maintained.
As for me, I introduced OnBroadway and jogle's favorite, as a hobby, back when the Internet was young (1994). After 7 years of updates, I am more than ready for a sabbatical from the on-line theatre arena. I too, have moved on to pursue other interests, however, that being said, Broadway and theatre remain very close to my heart. I fully expect to return to on-line theatre sometime in the future. Doing what, remains to be seen, but I will be back!
